MELATONIN
Insomnia , Jet Lag, SAD, Shift Work
Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland a small gland in the brain. It helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Very small amounts of it are found in foods such as meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables.
What does natural melatonin do in the body?
Your body has its own internal clock that controls your natural cycle of sleeping and waking hours. In part, your body clock controls how much melatonin your body makes. Normally, melatonin levels begin to rise in the mid- to late evening, remain high for most of the night, and then drop in the early morning hours.
Natural melatonin levels slowly drop with age. Some older adults make very small amounts of it or none at all; this is why some people find themselves having restless nights and not much sleep at all.
Melatonin can be taken as a supplement to help with the following:
*Insomnia
*Jet Lag
*Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
*Helping to control sleep patterns for people who work night shifts
*Preventing or reducing problems with sleeping and confusion after surgery
*Reducing chronic cluster headaches
INSOMNIA
Insomnia is a symptom of several sleeping disorders, and there are many reasons you can suffer including stress, depression anxiety or medication. Many trials have been conducted that show melatonin supplementation can dramatically improve or even cure peoples sleeping problems.
If you have been suffering with sleeplessness for longer than a few weeks and haven’t consulted your doctor then do so as this may be related to a medical problem.
JET LAG
Changing from one time zone to another can throw your body out of balance. Several human trials suggest that melatonin taken by mouth, started on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime at the destination) and continued for several days, reduces the number of days required to establish a normal sleep pattern, diminishes the time it takes to fall asleep ("sleep latency"), improves alertness, and reduces daytime fatigue.
If you are taking a long haul flight you might be interested in the
butterfly massager which is effective for stimulating the muscles and if placed on the legs will help to prevent swollen ankles and improve blood flow.
SAD
Light affects how much melatonin your body produces. During the shorter days of the winter months, your body may produce melatonin either earlier or later in the day than usual. This change can lead to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder.
Symptoms vary for different people but can include depression, anxiety, change of appetite (particularly cravings of sweet starchy foods), fatigue, lack of energy, over sleeping and lack of interest in normal activities.
OHTER USES
Scientists are also looking at other good uses for melatonin, some research showed when taken as a supplement it seemed to stop or slow the spread of cancer, make the immune system stronger and slow down the aging process. But these areas need more research.
Dosage
There is no set recommended dosage for melatonin supplementation so we recommend:
One capsule (containing 3mg of melatonin) about half an hour before bedtime at first, if you find it is not working quickly enough try taking it a little earlier in the evening, if you still don’t get the desired effect after a day or so, try increasing the dose to two capsules, you can gradually increase the dose daily if you have still don’t get an effect. If you feel groggy in the morning this means you taking a too stronger dosage.
For Jet Lag- take one on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime at the destination) and continue this for several days until you have established a normal sleep pattern.
SAD-Trials have shown that one of the notable features of SAD is that melatonin levels at night are really low, so taking the same advice for an easy sleep could relive the symptoms of SAD but start for a few weeks with a small dose, see how you feel then increase slowly if you feel it is necessary.
Possible Side Effects
In most cases, melatonin supplements are safe in low doses for short-term and long-term use with very few people experiencing side effects. Some people suffer one or two of the following symptoms which will cease as soon as you stop taking the supplement.
Side effects include: sleepiness-depending on the reason for taking melatonin this could be considered a side effect. Morning grogginess (in this case try reducing the dose it may be too high for you), Vivid dreams, headache, changes in blood vessels that may affect blood flow, Lower body temperature, mild stomach problems.
Who shouldn’t be taking melatonin
We do not recommend melatonin to people taking antidepressants or prescribed sleeping tablets, if you would like to take melatonin or replace you medication with melatonin please speak to your doctor first.
Children should not take melatonin.
Pregnant or nursing women should not take melatonin without talking to a doctor.
If melatonin makes you feel drowsy, do not drive or operate machinery when you are taking it.
If you are worried or unsure about taking melatonin you can always speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
What’s in our capsules?
Each one of our capsules contains 3mg of pharmaceutically produced melatonin, this is the safest way of taking melatonin, there are other forms available taken from the pineal glands of animals (often sheep or cows) but this rarely recommended because it can spread diseases.
